EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 THE MILLER-GARRETT 1786 M.1-A

LOT 99 1786 Connecticut Miller 1-A R4+ MBR, NGC graded VF20 . Choice glossy light to medium brown with chocolate brown in protected areas. Smooth and quite attractive, but the strike is weak at the dentils from K-9 to K-12 on the obverse. Just a few trivial planchet fissures including two very light voids on the cheek and a few more at the top of the bouquet on the reverse. An attractive piece, smoother than the Perkins example or either of the Ford pieces, although they are sharper. Weight 124.0 grains. The attribution and Miller-Garrett-Long Island Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Certification Number 6061902-004

 WELL PEDIGREED “SCHOLAR’S HEAD”

LOT 100 1786 Connecticut Miller 3-D.1 R5+ MBR, “Scholar’s Head, NGC graded VG10 . Rather glossy olive brown with lighter chocolate on the devices. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but there is very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable marks are two digs under the outstretched arm on the reverse. The date is strong and the legends are clear. There is a small, curved planchet clip at the end of the bust that affects only the dentils (not visible in the holder). The center of the obverse is softly struck, as usual on this popular variety. Weight 138.1 grains. A nice example for the grade, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Hall-Donald G. Partrick Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Certification Number 2048943-042 Ex Dr. Thomas Hall-Virgil Brand, New Netherlands Coin Co. 6/19/1958:69-Frederick B. Taylor, Bowers & Merena 3/27/1987:2342-George C.
