COUNTERSTAMPED CT
LOT 89
1785 Connecticut Miller 4.3-D R5+ MBR VF20 . Glossy brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth except for several planchet fissures on both sides, as nearly always seen on this variety. The largest fissure is at the bottom of the neck. No verdigris and the only contact mark is a tiny rim nick at the E in INDE. Late die state with obvious swelling on the lower part of the portrait. Graded VF30 and considered CC#6 or 7 for the variety by Syd Martin. Many of the details would support that assessment but the swelling associated with the late die state caused loss of detail, especially on the portrait. However the superb color and surfaces (minus the usual fissures) are certainly consistent with a higher grade. The Ford and Perkins examples of the variety are rough with fissures but earlier die states that show a bit more detail. Removed from a PCGS holder graded F12 (PCGS label #685162.12/45294560 included, and it shows the attribution and Martin collection provenance). Weight 133.7 grains. Comes with a nice provenance. LOT 91
1785 Connecticut Miller 4.3-D R5+ MBR, Counterstamped “IB” Brunk-43, F15 . Sharper but covered with microscopic roughness under slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. There are some tiny pits at the top of the reverse and a patch of roughness at the knee of the seated figure. The only significant contact mark is a scrape on the edge at EC in CONNEC. Counterstamped IB inside a small incuse rectangle high on the neck. This rare stamp is attributed to John Bayley, a Philadelphia silversmith. A great early counterstamp, and it comes with a nice provenance. Weight 146.9 grains. Ex Stack’s Bowers 3/21/2018:784-Sydney F. Martin Collection (includes the Martin collection envelope and lot ticket)
LOT 90
1785 Connecticut Miller 4.3-D R5+ MBR, PCGS graded F15 . Mostly glossy light brown on the highpoints and medium reddish chocolate in the fields and protected areas. Overall smooth but there are traces of microscopic granularity on the reverse, mostly at LIB where there is a trace of verdigris. The planchet quality is above average with only trivial flaws on the obverse and none on the reverse. The date is tight to the edge of the planchet but easily readable. Later die state with swelling across the shoulder and bust. Weight 143.0 grains. Rather conservatively graded by PCGS in our opinion, possibly due to the swelling that weakened some of the details on the obverse. The attribution and Twin Leaf provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 685162.15/36054539 Ex Jesse Patrick, 2002 C-4 Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 11/16/2002:75-W. M. “Jack” Wadlington (The Twin Leaf Collection)-the Copper Mountain Collection (includes the Patrick collection envelope, the Wadlington collection notes, and the C-4 sale lot ticket)
