EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

SUPERIOR 1785 “AFRICAN HEAD”

LOT 87 1785 Connecticut Miller 4.1-F.4 R1 “African Head” MBR EF45 Choice . Choice glossy brown and light chocolate. Mostly smooth with just a few microscopic planchet chips, mostly along the left edge of the obverse and top of the reverse (all as struck). Sharply struck with very light wear on the highpoints of the devices. Early die state with sharp, crisp devices. A superb example of the popular “African Head” variety that has a separate listing in the “Redbook” (see pages 60 & 61). Considered by Syd Martin to be finest or second finest of the variety. And it comes with a nice provenance, as you would expect for such a superior coin. Removed from a PCGS holder graded AU55 (label #685159.55/45294557 included, and it shows the attribution and Martin collection provenance.) Weight 129.2 grains.

Ex John J. Ford, Stack’s 5/10/2005:211-Anthony J. Terranova-Sydney F. Martin Collection, Stack’s Bowers 10/27/2022:1298 (as PCGS AU55)-Kevin Vinton (includes the Terranova and Martin envelopes)

SHARP “AFRICAN HEAD”

LOT 88 1785 Connecticut Miller 4.1-F.4 R1 “African Head” MBR, PCGS graded XF45 . Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown. Looks smooth but uniform microscopic porosity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No marks or verdigris, and the eye appeal of this piece is really nice. The highpoints are smooth. Struck very slightly off center to K-1 leaving the bottom of the date tight to the edge of the planchet (as usual for this variety). The “African Head” is strong. Not nearly as nice as the previous lot but still one of the finer “African Head” Connecticut coppers. The attribution and “African Head” feature are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 685159.45/40482157
