EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 623 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 AG3 . Several points sharper but damaged with a dent at the top of the obverse that flattened the rim and created a slight bend in the planchet. In addition there is a strong dent on the jaw plus other smaller marks on both sides. On the plus side there is no corrosion and the toning is glossy medium chocolate brown. E-MDS, Grellman state b early, with a subtle wave in the field from above star 3 to the nose. The date is strong and the overdate is clear.
LOT 626 1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head PCGS graded XF45 . Glossy light chocolate brown delicately woodgrained with lighter brown on the lower half of the obverse. Lightly worn on the devices with satiny luster in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and this cent is quite nice except for an obvious rim nick right of the date. M-LDS, Grellman state c early. The dashes on either side of the bottom of the 9 are gone but the die clashmark over the N in CENT is still clear. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35. Certification Number 1748.45/35901693

LOT 624 1839 N-2 R2 Head of 1838 EF45+ . Glossy light to medium brown with smooth surfaces. Fine flowline luster shows in protected areas, especially on the reverse, and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The only marks are two dull rim nicks at ES in STATES; otherwise it would rate a slightly higher grade. E-MDS, Grellman state a late. The dull die lines over STAT and RICA are still visible.
LOT 627 1839 N-5 R2 Booby Head, PCGS graded AU50 . Glossy medium brown woodgrained with darker chocolate brown on the obverse. Sharp and attractive but there are some notable marks including a rim bruise at star 13 and a smaller one over star 4, plus several small nicks on the chin. Sharply struck EDS with fine die lines from the dentils over TE in UNITED. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35. Certification Number 1751.50/37232001

LOT 628 1839 N-6 R2 Booby Head VF25 . At least ten points sharper with smooth surfaces but a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade. In addition the obverse rim has been lightly smoothed and many of the leaves have had their details enhanced creating fine veins that were not on the die. A very shallow but wide scuff left of the coronet and a pair of small nicks under star 8 can help identify this cent. MDS, Grellman state b, with a fine die crack through the D into the leaves under STATE. Nicely recolored glossy light to medium brown.
LOT 625 1839 N-3 R1 Head of 1838 EF40 . Sharper but the field at stars 1-4 has been lightly abraded and there is minor roughness at the top of the reverse. A very shallow pit in the field off the chin is a good identifying mark. Glossy light olive and steel brown with flowline luster in protected areas. LDS, Grellman state c. The depression in the field above star 1 is obvious and the berry under AM is gone.
