LOT 612 1838 N-8 R1 MS60+ . Lustrous medium steel brown with generous traces of mellowed mint red, especially on the lower half of the reverse. Satiny and very attractive. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a light scrape on the coronet over ER in LIBERTY and some extremely faint hairline scratches on the rim and dentils at stars 9-11. None of these marks is visible to the unaided eye, and they are not easy to see with a good glass. E-MDS, Grellman state a, with very fine flowlines in the fields and a sharp, curved die line from the dentils over star 5 to star 6. Removed from an older generation PCGS holder graded MS64RB (old foldover green PCGS label #01742.64/7146289 included).

LOT 609 1838 N-5 R1 AU58+ . Frosty steel brown and chocolate. Satiny and choice with just the faintest trace of rub on the highest points of the devices. A pair of very tiny rim nicks at the O in OF are the best identifying marks. MDS, Grellman state a late. The spike from the junction of the coronet and curl below is weak but still visible. Comes with a very nice provenance.

LOT 610 1838 N-6 R1 EF40 . Glossy light brown with darker steel brown on the highpoints. Smooth with no notable contact marks; a swipe of darker olive brown toning from the second S in STATES to the end of the wreath stem is a good identifying mark. LDS, Grellman state c. The point from the leaf tip under the R in AMERICA is gone and there is a die clashmark arcing through the end of the nose.

LOT 613 1838 N-9 R3 EF40 . Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned olive brown and steel with lighter brown tones dominating the obverse. Just a few marks on the bust and in the field over the bust, and there is a speck of raised corrosion right of star 2. E-MDS, Grellman state b. The phantom dentils on the obverse are gone but there is no trace of a rim cud under the 183. Removed from a PCGS holder graded AU55 (PCGS label #1741.55/15259441 included).
