HIGHLY LUSTROUS 1837 N-4

LOT 588 1837 N-1 R3 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters EF40 . Slightly sharper but there is some dirt or soft verdigris in a few of the protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Frosty light to medium brown with puffs of slightly darker brown on both sides. Traces of golden tan faded down from mint color remain visible on the reverse. A small tick on the jaw and a minor planchet lamination on the bottom of the U in UNITED are the only notable marks. E-MDS. The die line over the F in OF is clear.

LOT 589 1837 N-2 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters AU55 . Frosty light olive and bluish steel brown. Satiny and attractive with just the lightest touch of rub on the highest points of the devices. Looks mint state. The only notable mark is a dull nick on the rim at the C in AMERICA. MDS, Grellman state c, with a slightly raised retained cud break left of star 5. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS62BN (NGC label #956173-001 included).

LOT 591 1837 N-4 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters, PCGS graded MS65 Brown . Choice lustrous light steel brown with hints of light bluish steel overtone around the devices. Satiny and very attractive with just a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a tick under star 4, another above the C in CENT, one over that T, and a collection of ticks under that T. M-LDS with flowlined fields and fine die cracks on both sides (as always on this variety). The left top of the I in UNITED is weak but still visible. Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63. The attribution and Doctor Wachtel Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 37156.65/34722054

LOT 590 1837 N-3 R1 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters EF45 . Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy steel brown and chocolate with lighter brown and golden tan in protected areas on the reverse. Smooth and attractive. The only notable mark is a small vertical nick right of the eye. MDS with a clear die clashmark from the inner ear under the N in ONE. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees clockwise.
