 SHARP 1835 N-9

LOT 571 1835 N-9 R4 Large Date & Stars VF35 . Sharpness AU50 but lightly burnished and expertly retoned glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter brown and chocolate on the devices and in the fields. The burnishing was done to remove traces of very fine roughness, strongest right of the date where fine pitting and scratches to remove verdigris are still evident. A line of four tiny ticks on the lower part of the cheek and a corrosion pit on the edge over ES in STATES are good identifying marks. E-MDS, Grellman state b, with a die crack through the top of ERIC. One of the sharpest examples known of this tough die variety, and the eye appeal is quite nice in spite of the defects.

 SCARCE 1835 N-10 EX BORCHERDT-MENDELSON-WADLINGTON

LOT 572 1835 N-10 R4 Small Date, Stars, & Letters VF25 . Mostly glossy olive brown and steel. Sharpness ten points higher but there is extremely faint roughness under the glossy toning, mostly on the reverse. No verdigris and just a few marks including a dull scratch above and another below the second S in STATES, and some dull nicks around the end of the wreath stem. All the marks are well hidden and do not catch your eye; overall this cent has good eye appeal, especially the obverse. E-MDS, Grellman state b early. The crack through UNITED ST is clear but not yet strong, and the radial crack to the dentils right of that D has not formed. Graded VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #22110. Graded net VF25 by Del Bland. Comes with a nice provenance.
