EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 543 1831 N-12 R1 Large Letters VF25 . Sharpness EF40 but covered with microscopic roughness under rather dull olive brown and steel toning. The roughness is strongest on the obverse. There are traces of crud in protected areas and the best identifying mark is a sharp nick under star 9. E-MDS, Grellman state c, with fine die cracks on the obverse but the radial crack from star 13 to the dentils has not formed.

LOT 540 1831 N-9 R2 Large Letters, PCGS graded AU53 . Frosty light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Smooth with microscopic marks including a couple very light hairline scratches in the field before the face. EDS, Grellman state b early. The radial crack from star 5 is faint. The always present die cracks through the date and most stars are light, and there is a double profile on the forehead, lips, and chin (from machine doubling). Our grade is EF45. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36982.53/35754785

LOT 544 1831 N-14 R4 Large Letters VF35 . Frosty light olive brown with smooth surfaces and very nice eye appeal. Just minor contact marks including a few ticks on the jaw and another in the field before the mouth. MDS with fine radial die flowlines from the dentils on the reverse.

LOT 541 1831 N-10 R3 Large Letters EF40+ . Choice glossy light chocolate brown. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent has great eye appeal. No marks, just light friction on the highpoints. Close to EF45. M-LDS, Grellman state c early. The die crack at the top of the reverse is light. Noyes graded EF40, his photo #27722.

LOT 545 1832 N-1 R2 VF30 . Choice glossy light to medium brown with satiny mint frost covering the protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are some faint hairline scratches on the portrait, the strongest along the top edge of the coronet. None of the marks is visible to the unaided eye and this cent has great eye appeal. Would rate a higher grade if the strike was sharper. The stars do not have radial lines, the top of the hair bun is not complete, and the leaves on the lower part of the wreath are not fully struck. E-MDS, Grellman state b. The fields are lightly flowlined but the lines from the leaf under the first A in AMERICA are clear.

LOT 542 1831 N-11 R2 Small Letters AU58 . Frosty mix of steel brown and chocolate with an arc of lighter brown on the lower left part of the reverse. Overtones of light sea green show in some protected places on the obverse. No notable marks, just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. LDS, Grellman state g, with a cud break at TES that fills the top of the S and crumbling in the dentils at star 2, the latest state known. Removed from a PCGS holder graded AU58 (PCGS label #1681.58/05909946 included).
