EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 525 1830 N-5 R3 EF40 . Frosty steel brown and chocolate. Satiny flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse. There is very little wear on the highpoints but the strike is soft; only a few of the stars show any radial lines and the leaves at the bottom of the wreath are not complete. Another variety that often suffers from a blunt strike. The only mark is a dull, light nick on the nose. E-MDS. The inner circle at the dentil tips is still visible under the 0 in the date.

LOT 527 1830 N-7 R3 VF25 . Glossy steel and chocolate brown, lightly cleaned and nicely retoned. The surfaces are smooth with just a few minor marks including a tiny rim bruise just left of the date, another over star 9, and two more at S-O. Lightly worn but softly struck, as usual on this variety, which complicates grading. Called VF35 net VF30 and CC#4 by Reynolds. Not evaluated by Noyes.

LOT 528 1830 N-8 R1 Large Letters, PCGS graded AU58 . Frosty olive brown and steel with light steel brown in protected areas on the obverse. Looks mint state with excellent eye appeal, but a glass reveals a hint of friction on the highest points of the portrait. The only marks are a few trivial ticks on the cheek. MDS, Grellman state b, with a die crack from the bust tip to the dentils under star 1. The repunching on the 1 in the date is still clear. Our grade is AU55. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36955.58/34741446

LOT 526 1830 N-6 R4 Small Letters VF25 . Glossy olive and chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown in some protected areas. At least ten points sharper but there is a fine “X” scratched into the obverse centered on the ear and a smaller “X” scratched into the field over the N in ONE. These scratches are visible to the unaided eye but they are old and blended into the toning. The only other mark worthy of mention is a dull nick hidden on the curl at star 13. The surfaces are mostly smooth but there are traces of verdigris in protected areas on the right side of the obverse. Not perfect but not as bad as it might sound. Nicely struck for the variety but there is some weakness on the stars and bottom leaves of the wreath. E-MDS, Grellman state a, with an uncracked obverse.
