EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 518 1829 N-7 R3 Large Letters, NGC graded VF35 . Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless, just lightly worn. A tick on the truncation over the 18 and a streak of slightly lighter brown toning at the front edge of the coronet are the best identifying marks. LDS, Grellman state f, with all 5 of the “Wheelspoke” cracks on the reverse. Well struck for this variety, one that usually comes with significant weakness on the hair at the top and curl at the bottom of the obverse. Our grade is VF25. (The holder is scuffed on both sides.). Certification Number 2637352-001

LOT 520 1829 N-9 R4 Small Letters VF30 . Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Frost shows in the protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. Lightly worn but the strike is not perfect with the usual weakness on the stars, hair, and wreath. The surfaces are perfectly smooth except for a microscopic speck of reddish verdigris in the field under the chin. The only contact mark worthy of mention is a faint hairline from the nose to the earlobe. LDS, Grellman state c early, with an extension from the crack under star 1 up to the bust, but the extension up to the neck has not formed and the top of the A in STATES is still open. Graded VF30 by Bland. Reynolds says VF35 net VF30+ and tied for CC#8. Noyes says VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#17, his photo #34443. Not an exact science, but this cent comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 519 1829 N-8 R1 Large Letters, ANACS graded EF45 . Frosty reddish chocolate brown and burgundy. No roughness or verdigris, and the only marks are a few tiny ticks on the cheek and nose and a dull nick on the right top of the 9. LDS, Grellman state d, with a very narrow rim cud from just right of star 7 to star 8. Our grade is EF45. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Certification Number 5299083

LOT 521 1830 N-1 R1 MS60 . Very attractive lustrous light olive and steel brown with generous traces of slightly mellowed mint red remaining visible on both sides, mostly on the obverse. Nearly flawless; the only notable marks are a very light nick midway between star 1 and the chin, another on the jaw over the throat, and a microscopic speck of dark toning at the upper left point of star 8. The reverse is choice. MDS, Grellman state c, with die cracks at stars 1-3. A very nice cent. Claimed to be from the famous Stickney sale (Henry Chapman 6/25/1907), but this has not been verified.
