EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 510 1828 N-11 R2 PCGS graded AU55 . Glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter frosty steel toning in protected areas. The surfaces are nearly flawless and this cent has excellent eye appeal, just light friction on the highpoints. The only mark is a dull rim nick at star 13. Otherwise this cent is choice. LDS, Grellman state b. Die wear and lapping have removed the misplaced S right of the D in UNITED and the misplaced O right of the second S in STATES. Our grade is EF45+, close to AU50 . The attribution and Wachtel Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36901.55/38063651
LOT 513 1829 N-2 R2 Large Letters VF35+ . Frosty olive and steel brown with lighter brown in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Satiny mint luster shows in the protected areas. The only marks are a pair of nicks left of star 8 and two tiny pin pricks between the lips and star 3. M-LDS, Grellman state b, with the usual die crack through stars 1-4 plus another crack through stars 11-13.

LOT 511 1828 N-12 R3+ F15 . Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. Close to VF20 but there are some marks including myriad faint hairlines on the cheek, two dull nicks over the 82, and a scratch close to the right side of the D in UNITED. This cent has nice eye appeal for the grade. MDS.
LOT 514 1829 N-3 R3 Small Letters VF30 . Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel very delicately woodgrained with lighter brown on the reverse. Satiny flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has very nice eye appeal. No marks, essentially flawless except for a minor, very shallow planchet flake off the lower left point of star 13. There is very little actual wear but the strike was soft, as so often seen on this Small Letters variety. The strike makes grading a challenge and opinions can differ widely. MDS with the top of all 3 A’s filled. Noyes has it as VF30 Average Plus and CC#8, his photo #38884. Reynolds has it as EF40+ and CC#5. We concur with the Noyes assessment on this one.

LOT 512 1829 N-1 R3 Large Letters VF25 . Ten points sharper but there are traces of fine corrosion on a mostly smooth planchet. The roughness is most evident at stars 5-8 and at AMER, and there are traces of verdigris in a few places. Mostly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate with frosty light brown in protected areas. EDS, Grellman state a, with an uncracked reverse.
