EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 THE COLONEL GREEN-ERIC NEWMAN 1818 N-8

LOT 414 1818 N-8 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown . Frosty golden tan and very light olive with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Traces of mint red show on both sides, particularly on the reverse where at least 5% of the planchet shows mint color. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub or “cabinet friction” on the highpoints. Just a few trivial contact marks including a minor scrape on some dentils left of star 4 and a few tiny ticks on the cheek. EDS but not the earliest, Grellman state a. The die cracks on the obverse are very light and there are faint radial die flowlines in the fields, but there is no crumbling in the dentils over star 7. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. Comes with an historic provenance. The attribution and Wachtel collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36622.63/34741255 Ex Colonel E. H. R. Green-Green Estate-Eric P. Newman and B. G. Johnson (St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.)-Eric P. Newman Collection-Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions 11/14/2014:7099-Chris McCawley-Doctor Thomas Wachtel Collection, Early Cents Auctions 4/29/2023:82 Rick Simko-Al Nelson Collection (includes the Green-Newman collection envelope, the special NGC label from the Newman sale where graded MS63BN, and the lot tickets from the Newman and Wachtel sales)

LOT 415 1818 N-9 R3 EF45 . Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate with lighter tan faded down from mint color peeking through in some protected areas. Flawless except for some dull contact marks along the dentils outside star 9. M-LDS, Grellman state d early, with a narrow but clearly defined rim cud over star 8 and another over the first T in STATES. Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 416 1818 N-10 R1 AU50 . Frosty steel and olive brown. There is very light friction on the highpoints and the only notable mark is a light, barely visible scuff on the truncation over the 81. LDS, Grellman state b, with the usual die crack through the date and stars and no dentils remaining on the reverse. Most likely from the Randall Hoard.
