Some are sharper with marks but all are glossy brown and chocolate with a strong date. Lot of 5 coins.
From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection. The second 1849 N-2 is ex Stack’s 11/18/1950:807-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/1976-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (includes the Naftzger collection envelope)
LOT 547 1849 N-17 R4 EF45+. Slightly sharper with a few too many tiny contact marks for the higher grade. A thin diagonal nick on the throat is the only notable mark. Glossy medium brown with mint frost in the fields and protected areas and a few peeps of faded mint red on the reverse. E-MDS, die state b. The tops of the C & E in CENT are connected with crumbling and the fine die lines right of that T are clear.
LOT 549 1849 N-30 R5+ VF25+. Sharpness near EF40 with shallow verdigris outside the wreath clockwise from MERICA to UNITED. The remainder of the planchet is smooth with trivial contact marks. Glossy medium brown with darker reddish brown and olive dominating on the reverse. EDS, die state a, without crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. CC#11 for this rare variety in the Grellman census.

LOT 548 1849 N-23 R3 AU58. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a trace of rub on the highpoints. A small tick on the center of the eyebrow is a good identifying mark but you need a glass to see it. LDS, die state d, with repunching visible under the 1 & 4. This is Newcomb’s #13. A nice example of the variety, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census.
LOT 550 Pair of 1849 Cents grading EF40. Includes N-2 R2 EDS (c) and N-14 R3- LDS (c). Both are choice glossy brown and chocolate with smooth surfaces and very nice eye appeal. Lot of 2 coins.
