LOT 520 1847 N-8 R3 AU55. Frosty light brown with peeps of faded mint red in a few places. Satiny and choice with just a hint of friction on the highpoints. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state b, with a fine die crack at ME.

LOT 521 1847 N-19 R1 Repunched 84 AU55. A sharp mint state cent but there are some small marks on the rim at stars 3-5. Otherwise quite nice with attractive frosty light brown and chocolate toning and 5-10% of both sides showing mint red. E-MDS, die state a, with fine repunching visible on the 4 & 8.

LOT 522 1847 N-26 R3+ MS60. Lustrous light olive and chocolate. The fields are satiny, the strike is sharp, and this cent has great eye appeal. A small nick on the rim below star 13 is the only notable mark. MDS, die state c, with die cracks on the reverse but no rim cuds. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS64BN (NGC label #961928-001 included, and it shows the attribution)

LOT 524 1847 N-39 R3- AU58. Close to mint state but there is a small patch of microscopic reddish carbon left of the C in CENT. Frosty light chocolate and olive with 5% of the obverse and 20% of the reverse showing mellowed mint red. Sharply struck and void of contact marks. E-MDS, die state a late. The fine diagonal die line through the O in ONE is visible and the fields are lightly flowlined.

LOT 525 Pair of 1847 Cents with Rim Cuds. Includes N-7 R2+ M-LDS (b) with a rim cud at star 1 VF30 net VF20 for nicks, and N-18 R5 Repunched Date (the so called Large 7 over Medium 7 variety) M-LDS (c) with rim cuds from below the 1 to star 2 VF20+ net VG10 for strong rim dents. The rim cuds are clear on the first, weaker on the second. Both are glossy brown and chocolate. Lot of 2 coins.

LOT 523 1847 N-30 R4 Repunched 1 EF45. Choice glossy steel brown and chocolate with mint frost in protected areas. Smooth and essentially flawless with very light wear on the highpoints. MDS, die state b. The repunching at the bottom of the 1 is clear. Tied for CC#10 of the variety in the Grellman census. A very nice cent that comes with an equally nice provenance.

LOT 532 Trio of 1847-1850 Cents grading VF30. Includes 1847 N-1 Repunched Date E-MDS (b-), 1849 N-22 R1 EDS (a), and 1850 N-14 R4 EDS+ (b). The last two are slightly sharper with trivial nicks. All are attractive glossy brown and chocolate. Lot of 3 coins.

LOT 536 1848 N-41 R1 AU58. Very attractive lustrous light chocolate brown with lighter brown in the fields and protected areas and a few faint peeps of faded mint red on the reverse. Looks mint state with great eye appeal, but there is a trace of rub on the highest points of the devices. A tiny tick on the chin and another just right of the nostril are the notable marks. Scarce EDS, die state a, without crumbling on the left side of the second 8.

LOT 533 1848 N-9 R1 AU50. Choice frosty light brown. Lightly worn on the highpoints with great eye appeal. A small spot of darker toning under the N in CENT can help identify this cent. E-MDS, die state a late, with an uncracked reverse.

LOT 537 1848 N-42 R5+ F12+. Sharpness near EF40 but there are fine scratches on the cheek and neck plus numerous small contact marks, mostly on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth but there are traces of verdigris in protected areas on the obverse. Glossy steel brown and light reddish chocolate. EDS.

LOT 534 1848 N-14 R4- AU50. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas. Sharply struck with light friction on the highpoints and no notable marks. A shallow low spot under the E in ONE is the best identifying feature. EDS, die state a. The fine die lines at star 5 are clear. Tied for CC#9 of the variety in the Grellman census.

LOT 535 1848 N-24 R4+ EF40. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty light olive and steel brown. Smooth and essentially void of contact marks. A small swipe of reddish steel toning in the field before the nose is the best identifying mark. MDS, die state b, with a strong line up through the N in CENT and a weaker line from the right top of the O in ONE. Tied for CC#8 of the variety in the Grellman census.

LOT 538 Trio of 1848 Cents with Rim Cuds. Includes N-9 R1 LDS (f) with rim cuds at D-STATE (the cuds are partially visible) VF25 with a minor planchet clip, N-11 R5 MDS (c) with a clearly defined rim cud at ES in STATES VF25+ net VF20 for retoning, and N-13 R4+ LDS (b) with a strong rim cud above TES. LOT 547 1849 N-17 R4 EF45+. Slightly sharper with a few too many tiny contact marks for the higher grade. A thin diagonal nick on the throat is the only notable mark. Glossy medium brown with mint frost in the fields and protected areas and a few peeps of faded mint red on the reverse. E-MDS, die state b. The tops of the C & E in CENT are connected with crumbling and the fine die lines right of that T are clear.

LOT 549 1849 N-30 R5+ VF25+. Sharpness near EF40 with shallow verdigris outside the wreath clockwise from MERICA to UNITED. The remainder of the planchet is smooth with trivial contact marks. Glossy medium brown with darker reddish brown and olive dominating on the reverse. EDS, die state a, without crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. CC#11 for this rare variety in the Grellman census.

LOT 548 1849 N-23 R3 AU58. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a trace of rub on the highpoints. A small tick on the center of the eyebrow is a good identifying mark but you need a glass to see it. LDS, die state d, with repunching visible under the 1 & 4. This is Newcomb’s #13. A nice example of the variety, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census.

LOT 558 1850 N-21 R2 MS64. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown with mellowed mint red covering a third of the planchet. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless. The only defects are a small, shallow planchet flake in the field above the left side of star 12 and a couple microscopic ticks on the truncation. The surfaces are completely void of spots or carbon flecks. Worthy of gem status if not for the small mint-made planchet flake. LDS, die state c, with two clearly defined rim cuds on the reverse (Newcomb’s #10).

LOT 559 1850 N-26 R5- EF45. Ten points sharper but there is a diagonal scratch high on the neck and a few barely visible rim bruises on both sides. Glossy chocolate brown with mint frost in the fields and protected areas. LDS, die state b. The die line at the dentils over the N in UNITED reaches only to the center of the letter.

LOT 560 Pair of 1850 Cents grading EF40. Includes N-13 R3+ MDS (b), and N-17 R5 EDS (a). Both are at least 10 points sharper but have some defects; the first with a few small spots of verdigris and the second with light contact marks on both sides. The toning is frosty light to medium brown. Lot of 2 coins.

LOT 563 Trio of 1850 & 1851 Cents grading VF30 to VF35. Includes 1850 N-15 R2 E-MDS (a), 1850 N-25 R4 MDS, and 1851 N-2 R1 Scarce EDS (a). A couple are slightly sharper with minor marks but all are smooth with attractive glossy brown and chocolate toning. Lot of 3 coins.

LOT 569 1851 N-6 R1 Repunched 1’s AU58. Lustrous light to medium olive. Looks choice mint state but there is a trace of rub on the very highest points of the devices. No defects and great eye appeal. MDS, die state c. The repunching on the 1’s is weak, nearly gone.

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 640 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date VF35+. Slightly sharper with a few small nicks on the obverse, none significant. A spot of reddish toning in the hair left of the ear is the best identifying mark. Glossy light to medium brown. MDS, die state b. The die lines over NI in UNITED are gone but the top of the stray 1 in the dentils below the left side of the 8 is still visible.

LOT 644 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date EF40. Frosty medium brown and steel. Nearly flawless; the only notable marks are two tiny ticks on the rim over the E in STATES. MDS, die state b. Very nice for the grade.

LOT 642 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date EF40+. Slightly sharper but there are a couple microscopic scratches on the reverse. None is visible to the unaided eye and the toning is a very attractive glossy chocolate brown with frosty light brown in protected areas. MDS, die state b. The die line from star 1 is gone but the short point down from the inner hair bun is visible.
