EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 302 1802 S-239 R3 PCGS graded VF30 . Slightly sharper than the assigned grade but there is a faint reddish brown stain in the hair at the shoulder, and microscopic roughness shows in the stained area. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the toning is a very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Just a few minor marks including a vertical nick left of the L in LIBERTY. LDS, Breen state V, with a raised retained cud break between the two cracks arcing from the face (the so-called “elephant” die state). Our grade is net VF20. 36326.30/56549991

LOT 303 1802 S-240 R3 PCGS AU Detail, Cleaned . Mostly glossy light olive brown and chocolate with areas of lighter brown on both sides and hints of reddish brown in protected areas on the reverse. Looks smooth but a glass reveals extremely fine roughness in the reddish areas on the reverse. A shallow planchet flake on the neck and another at the base of the O in OF are the best identifying marks (both as struck). M-LDS, Breen state III late. The die crack up from the bust is clear and it reaches the rim before the eye. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#12, his photo #25700. Our grade is net VF30. 36329.92/56556698
