Fred 2 Book

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 824 1847/47 N-2 R3 Large 7 over “Small” 7 VF25. Sharpness near EF40 but there are a half dozen old scratches on the reverse, mostly inside the wreath. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and virtually void of marks; the obverse is choice. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with mint frost in protected areas. M-LDS, die state c, with fine die cracks on the reverse. The repunching at the top of the 47 is obvious, the so-called Large 7 over Small 7 obverse. A very popular “Redbook” variety.

LOT 821 1846 N-25 R5 Tall Date, Repunched 1 VG8. Glossy light and medium brown with a few splashes of dark olive brown. Minor marks and a couple traces of microscopic verdigris but overall decent for the grade. There is an incipient planchet clip at stars 6-7 and the opposing area at the bottom of the wreath (as struck). MDS, die state b. There is crumbling in the dentils below the end of the wreath stem but the C & E in CENT are not yet connected by crumbling. The repunching through the center of the 1 is clear.

LOT 825 1847 N-4 R3 Repunched 18 EF45. Slightly sharper with a dull rim nick at star 10, a few ticks on the face, and a small rim nick at OF. Otherwise quite nice with sharp details and very little friction on the highpoints. Glossy light brown with mint frost in the fields and protected areas. Rare EDS, die state a, with an uncracked reverse. The repunching on the 18 is bold.

LOT 822 1847 N-1 R2 Repunched Date EF45+. Close to mint state with great eye appeal, but there are a few contact marks. There is a faint hairline on the cheek, two nicks near star 10, and a pair of very well hidden scratches at the end of the wreath ribbon. In addition there are minor planchet cutter impressions on the edge: one above star 4 and another over star 7 (as struck). M-LDS, die state c. Repunching is visible at the left bottom of all 4 digits and there are several fine die cracks on the reverse. Very close to net AU50.

LOT 823 1847 N-1 R2 Repunched Date EF40. Glossy light brown with medium brown toning on the highpoints. Sharp and attractive with just tiny contact marks. A dull tick on the right side of the eyebrow is a good identifying mark, but you need a glass to see it. M-LDS, die state c. The repunching is still visible on all 4 digits and the reverse is cracked.

LOT 826 1847 N-7 R2+ VF30. Ten points sharper with some light nicks on the obverse and a rim bruise at OF. Glossy steel brown on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. LDS, die state e, with clearly defined rim cuds from 18 to star 1, star 2 to star 3, and star 11 to star 12. Tied for CC#7 of the die state in the Grellman census.
