EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 772 1842 N-2 R1 Small Date VF35. Ten points sharper but there is an obvious contact mark in the field over the portrait. Looks like the rim of another coin impacted there. Otherwise smooth and very attractive with light olive and brown toning. Mint frost shows in the protected areas. M-LDS, die state c. All the early die lines and hub defects are gone.

LOT 775 1843 N-2/7 R1 Type of 1842 VF25. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter brown in protected areas and darker steel brown on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable mark is a dull nick or chip on the rim at the top of the obverse. Scarce LDS, die state c (Newcomb’s old #7). The earlier die lines and points on the reverse are gone.

LOT 773 1842 N-4 R2+ Large Date VF30. Ten points sharper with microscopic planchet chips on the lower half of the reverse. Traces of dark planchet slag show in some of those depressions near the second A in AMERICA. Apparently the planchet metal was not prepared properly. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and glossy with attractive medium brown toning. MDS, die state b. The short point from the neck is still visible but the die lines at MERI are gone.

LOT 776 1843 N-4/13 R1 Petite Head, Reverse of 1844 AU50. Choice glossy light to medium brown with mint frost in the fields and protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only mark is a small splash of reddish toning in the center of the hair bun. LDS, die state d. The earlier die lines and points are gone (Newcomb’s old #13).

LOT 777 1843 N-4 R1 Petite Head, Reverse of 1844 VF30. Sharpness EF45 but there is damage on the edge right of star 9 and at the opposing rim over RIC. Recolored a rather glossy light olive and steel brown. LDS, die state d (Newcomb’s old#13) The earlier die lines and points are gone. In addition there may be some narrow rim cuds at star 7 nearly to star 8. Can’t be sure.

LOT 774 1842 N-6 R1 Large Date AU50. Frosty light olive and sea green delicately mottled with some light reddish brown toning on the reverse. Close to mint state with just a touch of friction on the highest points, but there is a thin planchet lamination through stars 4-6 and another on the rim at star 6 (all as struck). E-MDS, die state a late. The fields are lightly flowlined and the three small lumps on the obverse are dull but still visible.
