EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 751 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date MS62+. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining. Essentially flawless. A tiny planchet flake on the rim over the left side of the first T in STATES can help identify this cent, but you need a glass to find it. Sharply struck EDS, die state a early, with smooth, slightly reflective fields on both sides. The stray 1 in the dentils under the left side of the 8 is sharp and the die lines over NI in UNITED are clear. A very nice cent, close to MS63.
LOT 754 1857 N-2 R1+ Small Date MS63. Lustrous light to medium olive and brown with about 15% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The fields are hard and very slightly reflective, and the only notable defect is a speck of carbon over the E in AMERICA. The strike is sharp except for the top of the coronet over LIB, as usual for this variety. EDS, die state a. The fine die lines over UNIT are clear and there are fine die lapping lines in the field near stars 11-13. A nice example of the Small Date type.

LOT 752 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date EF45+. Glossy medium brown. Smooth with light wear and trivial marks. A small nick on the nose even with the bottom of the eye and a very tiny rim bruise over star 7 are the notable defects. E-MDS, die state a late. The top of the stray 1 in the dentils under the 8 is clear, the die lines over NI are weak but still visible, and the fields are starting to show fine flowlines.

LOT 755 1857 N-2 R1+ Small Date VF35. Ten points sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth but there are a few marks including a fine scratch across the jaw, a barely visible scratch from the chin to below star 2, and a small chip in the dentils at star 4. MDS, die state a late. Only a few of the early die lines over UNIT remain visible.
LOT 753 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but there is very fine carbon covering the U in UNITED and tiny specks of carbon on the obverse, mostly in the field right of the inner curl. The rest of the planchet is smooth with attractive glossy light olive and brown toning. Mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas and there is just a hint of wear on the highpoints. M-LDS, die state b. The top of a stray 1 punched into the dentils under the left side of the 8 is gone and the earlier die lines over NI are gone.
