LOT 748 1856 N-19 R2+ Repunched 856 MS62+. Lustrous steel brown with underlying very mellowed mint color covering about 20% of both sides. Sharply struck with only trivial defects including a speck of carbon under star 10 and very shallow low spots on the neck and inside the wreath (from debris/lubricant on the dies). E-MDS, die state a late or b early. The fine repunching on the 856 is clear and traces of the early die lines from stars 9 & 12 are still visible, A nice cent, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. LOT 749 1856 N-20 R3+ Upright 5 AU58+. Glossy light olive and medium brown with generous traces of faded mint red, mostly on the obverse. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a touch of rub on the very highest points of the devices. A small spot of darker toning between star 4 and the brow lock is the only notable mark, and it is trivial. LDS, die state d, with a die crack on the rim at star 13, and a tiny cud shows at the right end of this crack. Tied for CC#6 of the die state in the Grellman census. LOT 750 1856 N-21 R1+ Italic 5 AU55. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with satiny surfaces and 5% of the original mint red remaining on the obverse but only traces on the reverse. There are some rim nicks on both sides that do catch your eye plus a dull nick well hidden on the ear. Thin rim nicks at stars 4 & 6 are the best identifying marks. EDS, die state a. The fields are smooth and the die line from the dentils to the top of the second S in STATES is sharp. The earliest die state seen for this variety. This is the discovery coin for the die variety (comes with a Jules Reiver note on the Borcherdt collection envelope).
