Fred 2 Book
EARLIEST STATE N-4
LOT 756 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date EF45+. Sharpness AU50 but there is a nick close to the chin, a speck of carbon in the field against the top of the head, and a stain of darker reddish brown toning under the chin and on the neck. Otherwise the toning is a very attractive glossy light olive and medium brown. Very early die state, die state a early, with slightly reflective fields on both sides, and fine diagonal die polishing lines are visible in those fields. The fine die line from star 1 to the dentils is sharp. The earliest state seen for the variety.

LOT 758 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date AU55. Very close to mint state, and the cent has mint state eye appeal, but there are a few well-hidden marks. A dull scrape on the right side of the ear, another on the nose, and a dull, light vertical scratch left of star 12 are the notable marks, and they do not catch your eye. Glossy medium brown blending to olive brown and steel in protected areas. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has very nice eye appeal. M-LDS, die state b late. The fields are flowlined and the point down from the bottom of the inner hair bun is small but still visible.
LOT 757 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date AU58+. Glossy light to medium brown with a subtle puff of reddish brown toning at the M in AMERICA. Lustrous and very attractive with excellent eye appeal. A light diagonal nick in the center of the cheek is the only notable contact mark. Looks like a solid mint state cent. MDS, die state b. The die line at star 1 is gone but the point down from the inner hair bun is clear.
