EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

CHOICE N-22 EARLY STATE

LOT 684 1854 N-19 R3 AU58. Glossy light bluish steel brown with traces of mellowed mint red on both sides. Satiny with mint luster in the fields and protected areas. This cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The notable defects are a very shallow low spot on the jaw (caused by crud on the die), a small nick in the dentils over the first T in STATES, and a tiny diagonal nick under the E in CENT. The marks are trivial but can help identify this cent. MDS, die state b, with the usually seen fine die crack that arcs across the upper part of the obverse. Our grade is AU58, CC#13 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS64BN (NGC label #621750 002 included, and it shows the attribution).

LOT 685 1854 N-20 R3 Stray 1 in Dentils MS60+. Frosty light bluish steel brown. Satiny and lustrous with sharp details and excellent eye appeal. A tiny planchet flake under the hair bun, a couple ticks on the chin, a small rim nick over star 8, and another at IC in AMERICA are the only notable marks, and they are not distracting. E-MDS, die state a. The die line at the throat is dull but visible and the top of the stray 1 is clearly visible at the dentils under the right side of the 8. Tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census.

LOT 687 1854 N-22 R3+ MS63+. Lustrous light bluish steel with 15% of the planchet showing mint red. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has great eye appeal. The only defects are the usual shallow low spot that covers the upper half of the neck up to the top of the ear and a very light diagonal nick under the right side of star 1. The hair from the top of the ear to under the Y is not fully struck as a result of the minor die clog, but the rest of the portrait is quite sharp. EDS, die state a. The horizontal dash right of the top of the 4 is clear. A very nice cent, CC#5 of the variety in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS65BN (NGC label #3184016 002 included).

LOT 686 1854 N-21 R2 Repunched 185 EF40. A sharp, very attractive cent that looks mint state, but the cheek was burnished to remove some scratches. Expertly recolored glossy chocolate brown. E-MDS, die state b. The fine repunching under the 185 is clear and there are delicate die clashmarks on both sides.
