EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 679 1854 N-16 R3+ Repunched 1 EF45+. Glossy light to medium brown and tan. Mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas and this cent has very nice eye appeal. No notable contact marks, but there is a puff of reddish brown toning right of the date and a shallow low spot on the neck. LDS, die state c. The line from the left side of the 1 is gone and the fields are flowlined. The hair at the top of the ear is softly struck (a characteristic of the die state), but the other details suggest a higher grade.

EARLY DIE STATE N-17
LOT 680 1854 N-17 R1 MS62. Lustrous light bluish steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The only marks are some tiny, very faint splashes of slightly darker toning in the field around stars 6 & 7, a shallow low spot that covers the neck and chin (caused by debris/lubricant stuck to the die), and a tiny nick on the rim at the bottom of the reverse. Rare EDS, die state a, with tiny lines from the dentils at stars 2-4 and sharp die polishing lines through NITED. Tied for CC#8 honors for the variety but finest of the early die state in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS63BN (PCGS label #1904.63/16658858 included). Ex Douglas F. Bird-Walter Dudgeon, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/21/1998:1801 (via Don Valenziano)-Phyllis Thompson, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/31/2010:763-Thomas D. Reynolds-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Reynolds sales envelope)
LOT 681 1854 N-17 R1 MS60+. Glossy light olive with generous traces of mellowed mint red on both sides. Satiny mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains. The only defects are the usual shallow low spot on the neck up to the jawline, a tiny tick high on the cheek, and a very small planchet flake between stars 12 & 13. MDS, die state b late or c early. The dies lines at NITED are gone but the reverse is still uncracked. Very nice for the grade, close to MS62. Tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census.
