CHOICE RED & BROWN N-14
LOT 677 1854 N-14 R2- Repunched 4 MS63. Lustrous bluish steel brown with bright mint red covering a quarter of the obverse and very faded mint red on 15% of the reverse. Just a few minor defects including a faint diagonal hairline on the jaw, a struck-through line on the bust above the 1 (as struck), and a small mark on the edge at the N in UNITED. MDS, die state b. The horizontal line from the base of the stray 4 is visible inside the triangle of the regular 4 but the lines from the dentils at NI in UNITED are gone. An attractive cent that comes with a nice provenance.

CONDITION CENSUS N-16
LOT 678 1854 N-16 R3+ Repunched 1 MS60. Lustrous light steel brown with golden tan in protected areas on the reverse. The fields are satiny and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Would rate a slightly higher grade but there are some tiny pinpricks on the forehead and a hairline scratch right of star 3. A small planchet flake hangs down from the earlobe (as struck) and a spot of dark olive toning rests on the right side of the ear. Sharp EDS, die state a. The die lines are crisp and the repunching over the left base of the 1 is clear. Tied for CC#4 overall but finest known of the scarce early die state. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64BN (NGC label #1647872-016 included, and it shows the attribution). Ex David Stark 11/1990-J. R. “Bob” Grellman, Jr.-R.
