EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 674 1854 N-12 R2+ Repunched 1 AU58. An attractive lustrous mint state cent but the rim was lightly smoothed at star 11 and over ST in STATES, most likely to remove small rim nicks or light rim bruises. Otherwise free of marks with satiny surfaces and very nice eye appeal. Lustrous light steel brown with darker steel toning on the highpoints and a few peeps of faded red on the reverse. M-LDS, die state b late. The dash from repunching under the upright of the 1 is very dull and barely visible, and the diagonal die lines up from the dentils under the 54 are gone. The fields are rough from die flowlines. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS64BN (NGC label #308010 016 included, and it shows the attribution and Jules Reiver Collection provenance).

Ex Oneida 11/3/1968-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:20587-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:598-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Holmes collection envelope)

LOT 676 1854 N-13 R3+ AU50. At least 5 points sharper but this cent was lightly cleaned; now nicely retoned frosty light to medium olive and darker steel with traces of mellowed red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. The toning could easily pass as original. No spots or stains, and the only notable contact marks are a couple light nicks on the rim at the bottom of the reverse. E-MDS, die state b early. The die lines at S-OF are gone but the line up from the dentils under the right side of the 5 is clear. A shallow low spot covers the neck, much of the cheek, and most of the ear (as often found on this variety).

Ex R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:1387-John D. Wright, 2006 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 5/6/2006:485 (via Don Valenziano)-Phyllis Thompson, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/31/2010:759 Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 675 1854 N-13 R3+ VF35. At least 5 points sharper with a few old scratches on the face, all blended into the attractive glossy light to medium brown toning. The reverse is choice. Steel brown toning covers the highpoints and frost shows in the protected areas, especially on the reverse. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines under the 54 and the fine lines at ES-OF are weak but still visible. Rarely found in a die state this early. Comes with a very nice provenance for a relatively modest cent.

Ex Henry C. Hines-Bruno Crossfield-Willard C. Blaisdell (via Del Bland) 9/1976-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Crossfield/ Blaisdell/Naftzger collection envelope)
