EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 634 1853 N-14 R2+ Repunched 1 AU58. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. Sharply struck with very nice eye appeal. Just trivial marks; a speck of carbon in the dentils at the bottom of the reverse is the only one that is visible to the unaided eye. MDS, die state c early. A very narrow rim cud extends from below star 11 to below star 12. There is no trace of a rim cud at star 1 and the repunching under the 1 is sharp.

LOT 635 1853 N-15 R2 Repunched 5 AU55. A sharp, lustrous cent that shows no trace of wear, but there is a small patch of fine corrosion at the dentils below the end of the wreath stem. Otherwise the only defects area light contact mark on the cheek and a bit of crud on the leaf under the N in UNITED. E-MDS, die state a late or b early, with minor roughness at UNITED STATES. The early die line from the chin towards star 3 is faint but still visible. The repunching above the left top of the 5 is bold.

 EQUAL FINEST N-16

LOT 636 1853 N-16 R1+ PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. Choice lustrous mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints. Two-thirds of the mint color remains. The red is mellowed on the obverse, brighter on the reverse. The best identifying marks are a small, dull tick on the rim under the left side of the 1 and a speck at the lower point of star 12. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. The die clashmarks at the throat and over the O in ONE are visible but fading. Very sharply struck with fully defined radial lines in all the stars and a sharp point on the coronet. A very nice cent with outstanding eye appeal and an impressive provenance. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406016.65/18900532 Ex Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 6/13/1984:742-R.
