Just a few small defects including a trace of fine carbon on the right edge of the main curl and a few specks around star 3. LOT 629 1853 N-9 R2- Repunched Date, PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous tan and light steel brown with hints of faded mint color on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. A faint spot of slightly darker toning in the middle of the jawline and another under star 1 are the best identifying marks. MDS, die state b. Repunching is clearly visible at the bottoms of the 1 & 53, strongest inside the loop of the 5, but the earlier die lines at the inner curl are gone. Our grade is MS62+, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406000.65/18900522
LOT 628 1853 N-7 R2 MS60+. A sharp, very attractive cent that was dipped long ago and has retoned naturally to a frosty light olive with faint hints of iridescence in the obverse fields. The only mark is a tiny rim nick between stars 3 & 4. E-MDS, die state b early. The earlier die lines on both sides are gone but the spike from the dentils below the 8 is strong. The fields are smooth with fresh die lapping lines on both sides. Comes with a nice provenance.
