 SECOND FINEST 1853 N-3

LOT 624 1853/3 N-4 R3+ Repunched 3, NGC graded MS63 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright mint red toning to steel brown on the highpoints with at least 20% of the bright mint color remaining on the obverse and 65% of the reverse. Would rate a higher grade if not for traces of an old fingerprint on the face and field to the left. Otherwise the only marks are a speck of darker toning that touches the hair bun under star 9 and a tick hidden on a leaf over the E in ONE. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state b early. The repunching above the 3 is clear and faint traces of the die lines from the dentils over the N in UNITED are still visible. Our grade is MS63, second finest of the variety in the Grellman census. 5867633-003

 RARE VEDS N-5

LOT 625 1853 N-5 R2- AU55. Very close to mint state with excellent eye appeal. Glossy light to medium brown with chocolate on the highpoints and faded mint red in protected areas. The only notable marks are a tiny nick in the center of the cheek, a couple faint hairlines in the field above the head, and a small puff of reddish brown toning at the dentils right of star 11. Sharply struck VEDS, die state a. There is fine repunching under the 5 & 3 and the die lines at the inner curl are sharp. Second finest of this die state in the Grellman census.
