PROOFLIKE N-22
LOT 616 1852 N-22/9 R1 AU58. Glossy light brown with darker brown toning on the highpoints. Very close to mint state with a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only notable mark is a dull nick nestled between star 1 and the dentils. There are small traces of dirt in a few protected areas, but it is not visible to the unaided eye. Very early die state (VEDS) with smooth, slightly reflective fields on both sides. The earliest die state seen. All the fine die lines are sharp and the dies are uncracked. A rare die state of a common die variety. This is Newcomb’s #22.

LOT 617 1852 N-22/9 R1 MS60. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with traces of underlying very faded mint color on the obverse. Sharply struck on the devices but the dentils are weak, mostly flat, which is typical for the die state. A speck of darker toning under the right corner of the eye is the best identifying mark. M-LDS, die state c late. The earlier die lines are gone and the obverse is cracked. This is Newcomb’s #9.

SECOND FINEST TERMINAL N-23
LOT 618 1852 N-23 R5 EF40+. At least 5 points sharper but there are a few marks including a diagonal nick left of the earlobe, a couple ticks on the end of the chin, a small rim nick over star 8, and a small patch of fine carbon left of the date. Otherwise quite nice for the grade with smooth, attractive surfaces. Glossy medium reddish brown and steel with mint frost in protected areas. Rare terminal die state, state d, with two strong rim cuds on the reverse: one below the wreath stem and ribbon and another at AM. Second finest of only 8 confirmed of the die state in the Grellman census.
