FINEST N-18
LOT 611 1852 N-18 R3 MS64. Frosty mint red with blue steel toning on the devices, at least a third of the mint color remaining. A tiny, very light curved struck-through line under star 13 is the only notable defect, as struck. The reverse is flawless and this cent has great eye appeal. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. The dash at the dentils under the upright of the 1 is clear (most likely part of a misplaced 1), and a similar dash shows at a dentil tip under the 8. Finest known of the variety by a small margin in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS64RB (PCGS label #1899.64/60023243 included). Ex Denis W. Loring 1/1997-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:1111-Martin Paul, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/25/2003:1030-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:518-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Holmes collection envelope)
LOT 612 1852 N-20 R3+ AU50+. Closer to mint state with smooth, very attractive surfaces, but there are some barely visible hairlines above and below CENT (not visible to the unaided eye). Otherwise just a hint of friction on the highest points and no notable defects. Frosty light brown and olive. MDS, die state a. The fields are very lightly flowlined and there are no rim cuds on the obverse. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW. Has the eye appeal of a higher grade.

EXTREMELY RARE DIE STATE
LOT 613 1852 N-20 R3+ VF20. Glossy medium brown with olive brown in protected areas. Smooth with minor marks, just worn. A reddish brown spot left of star 11 and another in the center of the rim cud to the right are the only notable marks. Extremely rare M-LDS, die state b, with a rim cud at star 11. The cud is clearly defined on this example. CC#3 of only 7 known with the single cud in the Grellman census.
