 CONDITION CENSUS N-35 RARITY

LOT 576 1851 N-35 R5 EF40. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with wisps of darker chocolate brown toning on the obverse. Mint frost shows in some of the protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Smooth with minor marks including a very dull nick left of the earlobe and a tiny but relatively fresh nick on the front edge of the neck. EDS, die state a. Rim cuds show on the reverse (as always), clearest at ITE and MER. A nice example of this tough variety, CC#5 in the Grellman census.

LOT 577 1851 N-36 R5+ VF20. At least 5 points sharper but there are some contact marks on otherwise smooth, attractive surfaces. The notable marks are two fine scratches from the cheek to the neck, a vertical nick high on the neck, a small dig left of star 8, and a very light rim bruise under the 51. The reverse shows only a couple trivial marks. Glossy medium brown blending to olive brown and chocolate in protected areas. Tied for CC#13 in the Grellman census.

LOT 579 1851 N-38 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. Lustrous steel brown and light olive with about 25 30% of the original mint color remaining, mostly on the reverse. This cent is choice except for a subtle wisp of light reddish brown toning at stars 9-10 and another at F-A. Otherwise just a few trivial marks including a small carbon spot in the dentils over the left side of the M in AMERICA and a microscopic tick under the left base of the E in ONE. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. The fields have microscopic radial die flowlines, but the early points from the E & N in CENT are clear. A sharp, attractive cent in spite of the minor defects. Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63, and tied for CC#8 for the variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406768.65/81161840

LOT 578 1851 N-37 R4 VF35. Sharpness AU55, and the eye appeal is decent, but there are some fine scratches on the obverse, a line of dull ticks from the chin to below star 2, and the rims have been lightly filed around both sides. Glossy light to medium brown with mint frost covering the fields and protected areas. MDS, die state b. The fields are flowlined and there is a lump on the base of the T in CENT.
