EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 574 1851 N-33 R4 First 1 Repunched, PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light bluish steel and light olive brown with underlying faded mint color covering about 10% of the obverse. The reverse has peeps of faded mint color, but it also has a reddish brown stain at ON that reaches up to the two berries above. This stain is a minor distraction but the remainder of this cent is beautiful; the obverse is satiny and choice. The only other defect is a dull rim nick at the A in STATES. MDS, die state b early. The repunching on the first 1 is weak but still visible. Our grade is MS62, CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406749.63/81161837

LOT 573 1851 N-33 R4 First 1 Repunched MS60+. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate with small splashes of darker olive toning at the date and ED STATE. Underlying mint luster shows in the fields on both sides. There is a speck of verdigris left of the O in ONE but no notable signs of contact. E-MDS, die state a late. The repunching line under the base of the first 1 is clear but the fields are starting to show microscopic die flowlines, and a dull lump is beginning to rise in the field over star 3. Tied for CC#6 overall but finest of state a in the Grellman census.

 RARE EARLY STATE N-34

LOT 575 1851 N-34 R4 AU58. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate with traces of faded mint red on both sides. A puff of lighter brown toning between stars 3 & 4 can help identify this cent. The only contact marks are a couple tiny scratches right of the D in UNITED. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. Rare EDS, die state a, with fine die lines at the tops of TES-OF. Both dies have severely blunted features that resulted from improper die preparation. A very nice example of this curious variety struck from poorly prepared dies. Tied for CC#7 overall but second finest of the rare early die state.
