EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 580 1851 N-39 R2+ AU58. A frosty mint state cent with nice luster and excellent eye appeal, but there are a few small rim nicks at the top of the obverse. Otherwise choice, void of marks. Lustrous light brown and olive with generous traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. EDS, die state a. The small bar near the dentils over star 3 is clear.

LOT 581 1851 N-40 R5+ AU55. Glossy steel brown with faded mint red in protected areas on the reverse. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas. Very close to mint state showing a hint of friction on the very highest points of the devices. Just a few microscopic marks including a barely visible hairline scratch hidden in the hair above the ear, a tick on the inner point of star 13, and another off the upper right point of star 4. EDS. The fields are smooth except for impressed microscopic lint marks and low spots (all as struck). This variety nearly always has some low spots (caused by debris on the dies), and the obverse die is always blunted (same die as seen on the N-34 die variety, here with a new reverse). A nice example of this tough variety, CC#6 in the Grellman census.

LOT 582 1851 N-41 R4 MS60. Frosty light olive and bluish steel brown with faded mint red covering about 5% of the reverse. The only marks are a tiny carbon spot on the upright of the E in UNITED and a small spot of reddish verdigris between the T & E in STATES. Neither mark catches your eye. E-MDS, die state b early. The die lines at the date and stars 11-13 are gone and the lump on the rim over ME is just starting to form. Tied for CC#6 overall but finest of the earlier die state. Removed from an NGC holder graded MS65BN (NGC label #362935-001 included, and it shows the attribution).  Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/25/2003:1024-Daniel W.
