LOT 919 1856 N-20 R3+ Upright 5 AU58+. Very attractive glossy light olive and steel brown with faded mint red in protected areas on the obverse. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Satiny frost shows in the fields and protected areas and the only marks are some tiny planchet chips on the rims and a few tiny ticks left of star 6. LDS, die state d, with a die crack on the rim at star 13, and there is a tiny but clearly defined cud break at the right end of the crack. A nice example of this interesting die state, tied for CC#6 of the die state in the Grellman census.

LOT 916 1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 VF25+. Slightly sharper with too many light contact marks for the sharpness grade. A faint diagonal hairline left of the earlobe and a minor rim nick under the 18 are the notable marks, but none of them is significant. Attractive glossy medium brown with flowline frost in protected areas. Rare LDS, die state d, with a strong rim cud from over star 10 down to star 11.

LOT 920 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date, Stray 1 in Dentils VF30. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better with very little wear, but there are obvious rim bruises on both sides, the largest of these at ED in UNITED. A couple of these rim bruises have been lightly smoothed. The surfaces are smooth except for patches of shallow verdigris on the right side of the obverse and over the U in UNITED. Glossy medium brown and light olive with reddish brown on the right side of the obverse. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The fields are hard and slightly reflective, and all the fine die lines are clear. The top of the stray 1 in the dentils below the left side of the 8 is strong.

LOT 917 1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5 AU55+. Lustrous medium steel brown with generous peeps of mellowed mint red on both sides, mostly on the reverse. Satiny and attractive, very close to mint state. A small nick over star 6 is the best identifying mark. MDS, die state b. The early dash under the 8 is gone and the tip of the coronet is softly struck, as usual on this variety.
