EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 909 1855 N-4 R1 Upright 55 VF25. Glossy light to medium brown with darker brown on the highpoints. A nick on the rim at star 12 is a good identifying mark. M-LDS, die state d or e. Rim cuds over the second T and adjacent E in STATES are visible but wear may be hiding a rim cud at TA.

LOT 910 1855 N-4 R1 Upright 55 F15. Sharpness VF25 but covered with extremely fine granularity. Light olive and steel brown. LDS, die state f, with a series of rim cuds over STATES (the cud over the second S is faint).

 LATE STATE KNOB ON EAR

LOT 911 1855 N-9 R1 Italic 55, Knob on Ear F12. Glossy medium brown with darker brown on the highpoints. Smooth with trivial marks including a tiny tick on the throat. Rare LDS, die state g early. The knob break at the ear is nearly complete showing only two tiny dimples between the segments below the T & Y. Your cataloger has never seen a higher grade example without the dimples, so this may be as late as it comes.

LOT 912 1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 VF35. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there is a rim dent at the top of the reverse. The only other notable defect is a small low spot between stars 1 & 2 (as struck). Otherwise nice with trivial marks and attractive glossy light to medium brown toning. Frosty lighter brown toning shows in protected areas, especially on the reverse. E-MDS, die state a, before any die clogs in the stars.

LOT 913 1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 AU50. Glossy light brown and olive with peeps of faded mint red in some of the protected areas on the obverse. Sharpness closer to mint state with light friction on the highpoints and minor contact marks, but there is a shallow low spot on the neck and traces of dark crud at the dentils over star 3 plus some more at AME and the E in ONE. LDS, die state e, with lightly flowlined fields and subtle swelling inside the top of the E in ONE.
