EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
CHOICE 1823 N-2
yes LOT 303 1823 N-2 R2 VF25+ . Glossy medium brown with slightly darker steel brown on the devices. Smooth and essentially void of marks or other defects, just lightly worn. A thin, very light diagonal nick under the left foot of the T in CENT can help identify this cent. E-MDS, Grellman state b, with rim cuds from just over star 4 to star 5 and a smaller one involving 3 dentils over star 6. A very nice mid-grade example of this tough date.
Ex Craig Wanatanabe 11/1994-Stanley Chen (via Don Valenziano) 12/25/1994-March Wells, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/7/2000:1850 (includes the Chen and Wells collection envelopes and the Wells lot ticket)
LOT 304 1824/2 N-5 R4 Overdate 4 over 2 VG10 . A few points sharper and rather smooth overall but there are small patches of fine roughness on both sides, mostly left of star 2 and at the dentils over ERIC. A glass reveals minor hairlines scratches on both sides but the eye appeal of this cent is decent for the grade. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. Later die state with crumbling in the dentils on the obverse. The overdate feature is clear.
Ex James L. Corrado (who acquired it unattributed at the Indiana State Show on 6/6/1986)-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 2/11/2007:519 (includes the Corrado collection envelope and lot ticket)
LOT 306 1826 N-3 R-3 NGC XF40 . Light brown and deeper olive brown, mottled on the obverse while more even on the reverse. There are a few trivial marks in the fields, nothing major or noteworthy. Smooth, glossy surfaces. M-LDS(d). Our grade is VF20. 3313408-012
LOT 305 1825 N-8 R3 VF25 . Ten points sharper with a patch of raised corrosion at the E in STATES. Otherwise the planchet is mostly smooth with traces of microscopic roughness under mostly glossy reddish brown and mahogany toning. MDS, Grellman state b, with a die crack from the tip of the coronet to star 6. Removed from an ANACS holder graded VF25 (ANACS label #7446934 included, and it shows the attribution).
LOT 307 1826 N-5 R-2+ VF35 . Attractive medium brown toning with one minor nick below star 7. Free of notable marks otherwise with smooth, hard surfaces. LDS with extensive rim crumbling along the upper obverse. Nice eye appeal.
