EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 BREEN PLATE COIN

yes LOT 240 1802 S-230 R1 VF25 . Five points sharper but there are some shallow planchet chips on the chin and a smaller one left of the nostril (all as struck). Otherwise smooth with trivial contact marks including a small rim nick left of the lowest curl. Glossy light olive brown. Softly struck on the bust due to significant die failure on the opposing area at the top of the reverse. Extremely rare TDS, Breen state X, with strong die cracks and swelling at the top of the reverse plus a raised cud break connecting the top two leaves with a strong extension to the right. This is the Breen plate coin for the die state. Another great die state in this year’s EAC Sale.

Ex Chris McCawley, 2012 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 5/5/2012:187-Erik Schneckloth Collection (lot ticket included)

LOT 241 1802 S-237 R2 VF25 . Ten points sharper but there are traces of shallow verdigris in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is nice. Just a few notable marks including two nicks at the eye and a couple more on the cheek. Mostly glossy olive brown and reddish chocolate with lighter steel brown on some of the highpoints. MDS, Breen state IV, with cracks on the reverse. The face and opposing leaves under RIC are softly struck.
