 S-19A WITH BLUNDERED EDGE LETTERS

yes LOT 112 1794 S-19a R5+ Head and Edge of 1793 G4 . Partly glossy olive brown and steel. Unevenly struck with weakness on the lower obverse and upper reverse. The details on the portrait are consistent with a slightly higher grade, but the lower part of the date and the legends on the upper part of the reverse are weak or missing. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth with a mix of microscopic roughness and tiny contact marks, mostly on the obverse. The best identifying mark is a small planchet chip in the wreath left of the top of the C in CENT. The edge lettering is strong but blundered reading ONEONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR. The downturned leaf following DOLLAR is bold. Removed from an ANACS holder graded G4 (ANACS label # 2452770 included, and it mentions the attribution and “BLUNDERED EDGE LETTERS”).

Ex Michael Iatesta, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/19/2005:261-Douglas F. Bird-Thomas D. Reynolds-Erik Schneckloth Collection (includes the Iatesta collection envelope and Reynolds sales envelope plus the Superior lot ticket)

LOT 113 1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG10 . Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with lighter and darker shades of brown and chocolate. Both sides are covered with microscopic roughness but there is no verdigris. The only notable mark is a small chip between the O & N in ONE. Later die state with an obvious bulge in the field under the cap. The date is complete and easily readable but not strong, as usual, while the details on the reverse are sharper thanks to the raised rim on that side. The edge lettering is complete and bold.

LOT 114 1794 S-20 R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG7+ . Slightly sharper with fine roughness in the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a dull chip or depression on the bottom of the neck at the bust, a small rim nick left of the top of the cap, and a few thin, parallel planchet fissures at UNIT (as struck). The date is strong except for the bottom of the 1, and the legends are readable (although some elements on the reverse are weak). The edge lettering is bold.
