EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 107 1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 VG7 . Sharpness near F12 but myriad light scratches cover much of both sides and there is a collection of contact marks on the upper part of the neck. Minor roughness covers all but the highpoints of the devices, which are smooth, and there are traces of fine verdigris in a few places. Very shallow dents near the rim behind the portrait have caused a minor bulge at UNITED. The surfaces display a decent amount of gloss in spite of the minor roughness. Recolored an attractive medium chocolate brown with a hint of reddish chocolate toning in the protected areas. Very late die state, the latest seen. Although wear has removed most of the bisecting obverse crack, the crack is strong and wide at the end of the pole. This die state is clearly later than Breen’s state IV. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for much of ONE CENT thanks to the swelling in that area associated with the late die state.

 SEMI-UNIQUE S-17B/NC-4

yes LOT 108 1794 S-17b R8 Head of 1793 with Edge of 1794, PCGS graded Fair-2, CAC Approved . Glossy chocolate brown and steel with smooth surfaces that are consistent with a much higher grade. The only marks are a pair of shallow fissures from the 17 to the left. Essentially just a heavily worn cent with great surfaces. The upper half of the 79 is clear but only the tops of the 1 & 7 are visible, and those are weak. LIBERTY is gone as is most of the reverse, but the portrait is complete. Fortunately the edge lettering is bold including the upturned leaf following DOLLAR. Only two examples of this variety are known, this piece and a sharper but corroded net AG3 (Daniel Holmes:29 in 9/2009 at $26,500-Adam Mervis:2428 in 2014 at $30,550). And that piece resides in a collection that probably will not reenter the market for a long time. So it might be a case of “now or never” for this variety. Graded Fair-2 and CC#2 behind the AG3 in the Bland census. Noyes says Fair-2 and CC#2 as well, his photo #34941. Our grade is Fair-2. Obviously this is the only example that has received a grade from a third-party grading service, not even considering the CAC approval. A great opportunity for the serious specialist. (The holder is scuffed and scratched.) 35507.02/83541214 Ex David L. Palmer-Anthony J. Terranova 9/19/1996-Wesley A.
