EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
TERMINAL STATE S-9
1793 Smith Counterfeit of S-8 . Very attractive glossy medium brown. A wonderful example of the work of “Smith of Ann Street.” These “Smith Counterfeits” are well worn early large cents, mostly dated 1793 and 1794, that were smoothed down and engraved to resembles higher grade 1793 cents. The engraver was William D. Smith of New York City, and this example showcases the skills of a great artist who produced a limited number of these cents in the mid-1800s, all priot to 1868. The devices on this cent resemble the Sheldon-8 variety, but none of the details is a perfect match. Noyes photo #62656. Weight 150.7 grains. One of the finer examples known today, and comes with a nice proveanance.
LOT 93
1793 Smith Counterfeit . The obverse grades VG10 but the reverse is nearly slick. The edge lettering appears to be a type “a”, the Edge Device of 1793, but this is uncertain. Glossy brown and light chocolate. Ex; Dr. Charles L. Ruby - Superior 2/11/1974:325 (plated) - Denis Loring - Maynard Schwartz, Stack’s 9/2011:2290 - 2018 EAC Sale:109 - Douglas F. 1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars Edge, PCGS graded VG8 . Slightly glossy dark steel and reddish chocolate brown. The planchet looks smooth but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity in protected areas on the reverse. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are two dull nicks on the rim right of the date and a small diagonal scratch in the lower hair strands. Terminal die state, Breen state IX, with severe die failure on the lower right part of the reverse. The cracks and swelling obliterate portions of the wreath while weakening the bow and ERICA. This must have been one of the last cents struck using this badly failed reverse die. The obverse die, which was still quite serviceable, was retained and mated with another reverse die to strike the S-8 variety. Crosby and Sheldon incorrectly placed S-8 before S-9 in the emission sequence. Our grade is G6. The attribution and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 35459.08/36223018 Ex Wayne Phillips-Douglas F. Bird 10/2014-James A. LOT 95
1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars Edge G6 . Sharpness VG10 but covered with very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas, strongest around the end of the bust. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a small rim bruise under the 3 in the date and another over the I in UNITED. The date is complete and easily readable (although the 3 is relatively weak) and the legends are complete. LDS, Breen state VIII. The die crack at CA to the stem is strong and the area under CA is badly swollen due to die failure in that area.
