EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 84 1793 S-4 R-3 Periods Chain PCGS VG Details (Damage) . VG sharpness but there is an area of pitting left of LIBERTY, a few more pits along the lower obverse rim, a couple notable scratches extending from both the upper and lower chain, and numerous scattered marks across the fields and deviecs. The most notable of those marks is through the forehead. Attractive medium brown and olive. The top half of the date is readable, as are the legends, though the period is not. Bold Vine & Bars Edge. Our grade is G4. 35444.98/47954236

 RARE LATE STATE S-5

yes LOT 85

1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge with Large LIBERTY, PCGS F Detail, Environmental Damage . Partly glossy dark steel and olive brown. Very fine roughness covers the fields and protected areas but the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris, just a few marks. The notable marks are a fine diagonal scratch through the leaf sprig over the date and three minor planchet fissures (as struck) at D-STATES. The date and legends are complete and easily readable, although the bottoms of the 9 & 3 are starting to fade into the rim. Very rare LDS, Breen state III, with a rim cud break connecting ER in LIBERTY to the rim above. The cud is clearly defined in spite of the low grade. There are only a few known in this latest die state. The finest is mint state and appeared as obverse 4 on Levick’s plate. That cent is impounded in the ANS Collection. There is also a crescent-shaped lump in the field behind the head (created by a chip out of the die), a feature not mentioned in Walter Breen’s comprehensive reference on the cents of 1793-1814. A neat die state, and quite rare as such. Our grade is net G5. The attribution and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. (The front of the holder is scratched.) 35447.97/36223020

1793 S-5 R-4 Vine & Bars Edge Wreath VG10 . 10 points sharper but likely buried in the ground for a time and now covered with fine granularity on the left obverse and corrosion on the reverse. Semi-glossy dark dark brown with areas of olive and lighter tan on the reverse. Sharp details with much of the hair detail remaining, bold date and legends.

LOT 86

LOT 87

1793 S-6 R-3 Vine & Bars Edge Wreath PCGS XF Details (Repaired) . Light olive and medium to dark chocolate browns on the obverse, the reverse light brown and light olive. We are not sure as to what deserved the Repaired distinction by PCGS, however there is evidence of tooling around the upper left obverse field and along the portrait’s face and neck by the hair. The other notable marks include old hairline scratches across the reverse. Glossy smooth, hard surfaces, with decent appeal despite the detractions. Our grade is XF40 net VF20. 1347.98/45887212
