EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025
LOT 785 Pair of Cents with Date Altered to “1804” . The first is an 1803 S-245 late die state with a cud at RICA in G5 The engraved 4 is decent and displays some talent but is far from perfect. The second is an 1803 S-256 AG3 net Fair-2 for scratches. The engraving is horrible. Wouldn’t fool anyone. Lot of 2 coins.
The first is ex Tom Matthews, 2012 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 5/5/2012:255 (lot ticket included). The second is from an unrecorded source. Both are from the Erick Schneckloth Collection
LOT 782 1804 S-266a Electrotype Copy VF25 . Cleaned and now toned light brown, light steel, and faded orange with burnished, smoothed surfaces. Only a few trivial marks, a couple nicks over the bust tip and one on the neck the most notable. This is an electrotype of an 1804 S-266a EDS prior to the cracks and rim cuds.
LOT 786 1809 S-280 Cast COPY F12 . Sharper but dull and covered with microscopic roughness (possibly from the casting process). Olive brown and steel.
LOT 783 1804 S-266a Electrotype Copy VF35 . Glossy medium brown with hints of the base metal visible on some of the high points and rims. There are also a couple hairline scratches on Liberty’s face and jawline, the only marks. Smooth surfaces. This is an electrotype copy of the 1804 S-266a EDS prior to any cracks or rim cuds.
Ex Denis W. Loring Collection 7/29/1987-Pete Smith (includes the Smith collection envelope)
LOT 787 1809 S-280 Cast COPY F12 . A mate to the preceding lot. Same process, same look.
Ex Bob Kelly 6/27/1984-Pete Smith Collection (includes the Smith collection envelope)
LOT 784 “1804” Cent, Date Reengraved on an 1803 S-249 F12 . Slightly sharper but a bit dull and covered with microscopic roughness. No verdigris, only trivial marks including a thin vertical nick under the earlobe and a small rim bruise at the E in LIBERTY. Olive brown and steel. The reengraving on the 3 is quite nice and the result is a “4” that nearly duplicates the one on a real S-266. Of course the Corrected Denominator feature of the host S-249 is a dead giveaway.
LOT 788 1811 S-287 Electrotype COPY VF25 . Nice details with a couple small test marks on the rim that exposed some of the underlying base metal. Otherwise olive brown and steel.
Ex Thomas D. Reynolds-Erik Schneckloth Collection (includes the Reynolds sales envelope)
Ex Denis W. Loring 7/29/1987-Pete Smith Collection (includes the Smith collection envelope)
