EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025
LOT 395 1847 N-20 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown . Lustrous brown and light olive with 10-15% of the planchet showing mint color, mostly on the reverse. Satiny and very attractive with minor defects. A speck of reddish corrosion under the chin, a faint hairline scratch high on the neck, a tick in the center of the cheek, and a small planchet flake in the field off the chin are the notable marks. E-MDS with light radial flowlines in the fields. The fine diagonal lines from the neck and chin are clear. Our grade is MS62. Tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. 1877.64/29153102
LOT 397 1847 N-21/40 R1 PCGS graded MS64+ Brown . Highly lustrous steel brown and olive with 10% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. A very attractive cent with trivial marks. A thin, barely visible nick along the throat, a puff of slightly darker toning left of star 12, and a small nick near the dentils under the right side of the 8 are the only notable marks. E-MDS, die state a, with fine die lines in the fields on both sides and an uncracked reverse (Newcomb’s #21). Our grade is MS60+, close to MS62. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 37316.64+/38359429

LOT 396 1847 N-20 R3 PCGS graded AU58+ . Very attractive lustrous light olive and chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has great eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the portrait. The only marks are a very thin vertical nick on the jaw over the throat and a faint diagonal scuff between star 3. The best identifying mark may be a tiny speck of darker toning just right of the nostril. Nicely struck E-MDS. The die lines at the neck and throat are sharp, the horizontal lines at NE in ONE are clear, and very fine radial die flowlines show at the dentil tips. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. (The holder is lightly scuffed.) 37313.58+/40615503
LOT 398 1847 N-21/40 R1 EF40 . Sharpness very close to mint state with lustrous surfaces and very nice eye appeal, but there is a fine scratch from the cheek before the ear down to the upper part of the neck close to the curl. Otherwise essentially flawless. The scratch shows only if you get the light at the correct angle and it blends nicely into the toning, but once you see it you can’t ignore it. M-LDS, die state b, with a die crack at ME to the dentils at both ends (Newcomb’s old #40). Comes with a nice provenance.
