EARLY AMERICAN COPPER SOCIETY AUCTION 2025

CONDITION CENSUS 1847 N-15 EX NAFTZGER

PEDIGREED 1847 N-18

yes LOT 391 1847 N-18 R5 Repunched Date AU58 . Frosty

golden tan with subtle overtones of light sea green. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the very highest points of the devices. A couple tiny swipes of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) at BE in LIBERTY and a light diagonal nick on the chin are the only notable marks. MDS, die state a, with satiny fields from fine die flowlines in the fields but no cud breaks. The always-present “moonscape” texture on the portrait is clear as is the repunching on all 4 digits. The repunching over the top of the 7 has been called a “Large 7 over Medium 7” in some older references, but the upper 7 was just more delicately impressed into the die so it appears slightly smaller. A great example of this tough variety, and it comes with a superb provenance that has been traced back unbroken for a century. Ex James G. Macallister 5/23/1928-Willard C. Blaisdell 9 1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr., 1990 EAC Sale, lot 342-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:399 (includes the Blaisdell, Naftzger, and Brown collection envelopes and both lot tickets)

yes LOT 390 1847 N-15 R4+ 1 & 7 Repunched, PCGS graded

MS64 Brown . Glossy medium brown and light olive with traces of mellowed mint color remaining on both sides. Just a couple very light marks including a fine diagonal pinscratch high on the neck, a very finely abraded area just right of the 7 in the date, and a tiny curved struck-through line in the field right of star 3 (as struck). Rare very early die state with smooth, slightly reflective obverse fields that contribute to the excellent eye appeal of this cent. Clear repunching shows under the base of the 1 and right of the base of the 7. Our grade is MS60 , tied for CC#5 for the variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 37304.64/18900159 Ex Gensheimer Collection-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/15/1976 (via Del Bland)-R.
