INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024
LOT 374 1803 S-261 R2 Small Date, Large Fraction EF40. Five points sharper but there are traces of faint roughness at RTY and an obvious planchet flake at the bottom of the denominator (as struck but distracting nonetheless). Frosty medium steel brown with hints of light reddish steel on the obverse and a puff of dark olive brown toning in the hair left of the neck. Lustrous lighter steel brown shows in protected areas on the reverse. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack up between the 8 & 0 to the shoulder. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #23195. Bland says EF40 and CC#9 in his census. Ex Ralph Goldstone 10/19/1962-C. Douglas Smith-Chris McCawley 1999-Robert C. Clark, Bowers & Merena 2/2000:313-Chris McCawley, 2004 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions, lot 262-Thomas D. Reynolds 3/19/2009-Terry Denman Collection, 2022 EAC Sale, Early Cents Auctions 5/14/2022:249 (includes the Denman collection envelope)
LOT 377 1803 S-263 R3 F15. Partly glossy olive brown and dark steel. Slightly sharper but the reverse is covered with microscopic roughness on all but the highpoints. The obverse is smooth. No verdigris and the only marks are a nick on the left top of the Y and a tiny planchet chip near the dentils right of the forehead (as struck). MDS, Breen state III with fine die cracks (which are faint on this piece).
LOT 375 1803 S-262 R3 F15. Sharpness VF30 but there is a small punch mark on the B in LIBERTY, a few small pits on the cheek, a small dig on the top of the second S in STATES, and a patch of pitting on the wreath ribbon. Specks of dark green verdigris show in the pitted area. Otherwise smooth with minor marks. Glossy light olive. MDS, Breen state II.

LOT 376 1803 S-263 R3 F12+. Sharpness VF25 but there are numerous contact marks. The notable ones are a chip above the hair ribbon, a rim nick off the lower end of that ribbon, a couple scratches on the bust, a nick on the upper lip, and a small scratch under the NE in ONE. Light steel brown. Rare EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. The strike is uneven with weakness at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse--a characteristic of the die state.
LOT 378 1803 S-263 R3 F12+. Sharpness VF30 but covered with uniform microscopic porosity. No verdigris and the notable marks are a dull rim nick below the 80, some very faint vertical hairlines on the face, and a shallow planchet flake at the top of the E in LIBERTY, a dull scratch across ERT, and a rim nick at the F in OF. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a strong cud break connecting the date to the rim below.
