 RARE RETAINED CUD S-259

LOT 371 1803 S-259 R4 Small Date, Large Fraction F15. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with darker olive brown crud in some of the protected areas around the portrait. Trivial contact marks and smooth surfaces. A tiny rim nick at the T in UNITED is the best identifying mark. Very rare M-LDS, Breen state III late, with a raised retained cud break at TAT. The cud is raised most on the left end. An attractive example of this tough die state.



LOT 372 1803 S-260 R1 Small Date, Large Fraction F15. Sharpness VF35 but covered with fine porosity. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a fine diagonal scratch low on the neck. Slightly glossy dark steel brown. MDS.

LOT 373 1803 S-260 Die-Struck Copy MS60. Attractive lustrous light to medium brown. Satiny and flawless. These copies were struck using spark-erosion copy dies and began showing up around San Francisco in the mid-1980’s (hence the “Bar Area Counterfeit” label). The naked-eye tell on these is the sharp, squared edge, and a glass shows the sandpaper texture plus raised lines on the front edge of the neck.
