EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 SHARP S-264 LATE STATE

LOT 379 1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date, Small Fraction VG8+. Sharpness VF35 or better but covered with fine to moderate granularity, strongest along the bottom of the reverse. No marks, just microscopic verdigris in some places and just a touch of wear on the highpoints. Looks like a cent that was lost in an unfriendly environment soon after entering circulation. Very slightly glossy dark olive brown. LDS, Breen state II, with heavy swelling at STA that completely obliterates those letters. Graded VF35 net VG7 by Noyes, his photo #23982. Bland lists this example as VF35 net VG10. A sharply detailed example of a neat die state. Ex J. R. (Bob) Grellman (discovered unattributed at a small coin show in Daytona Beach, Florida, 2/23/1990)-Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz-Darwin B. Palmer 1/1991-John M. Ward, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/5/2004:575-Chris McCawley 7/2005-Terry Denman Collection (includes the Denman collection envelope)

LOT 380 1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date, Small Fraction AG3. Rather glossy chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning on the devices. The devices are smooth but a glass reveals microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas, strongest in the field over the bust. No notable verdigris and the only marks are two dull scratches under ME in AMERICA and a pair of thin nicks on the rim over the second S in STATES. LDS, Breen state III, with a significantly raised area at STA that obliterates those letters. The date is complete and easily readable and most of the small fraction is visible as well. A decent lower grade example of this classic “Redbook” rarity.

Ex Douglas F. Bird-Lucien Birkler Collection (includes the Bird sales ticket)

LOT 381 1803 S-265 R4 Large Date and Fraction F12. Sharpness VF20 but there is a small patch of fine roughness in the field over the bust, a dull nick under the end of the hair ribbon, and uneven roughness covering the upper half of the reverse. The roughness is somewhat hidden under the glossy olive brown toning that varies from steel brown on the devices to dark brown in protected areas. MDS, Breen state IV, with a fine die crack from the bust tip to the dentils and stronger cracks at and below STATE. A decent example of this popular “Redbook” variety.
