EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 CONDITION CENSUS NC-3 RARITY

LOT 287 1797 NC-3 R6- PCGS Fine Detail, Repaired. Sharpness F12 overall, considerably better near the rims, but there are several dents on the portrait that have been partially smoothed by burnishing. The dents were strong enough to create bulges on the reverse that weakened CENT and the bottom of the wreath. Retoned glossy dark steel and olive brown with slightly lighter highpoints. No verdigris. EDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked reverse. Graded VG8 net G6 and CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20963. Graded net VG7 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland/Breen census. Our grade is net G5. The finest of the variety is a net F15 example in the ANS Collection. The next best is a net VG8. Not much from which to select for this very rare variety. 1422.98/34995023 Ex C. LOT 288 1798 S-147 R5- Large 8, Style I Hair, PCGS graded VF20. Smooth and attractive but there are a few nicks on both sides including one on the neck, another on the shoulder, a dull rim nick at the second S in STATES, and a small rim nick under the right end of the fraction. None of these marks is significant but there are more than you want to see at this level of sharpness. Glossy light olive and chocolate. EDS, Breen state I. The reverse is uncracked. Called VG10 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says F15 net VG10 (although previously he called it net F12) and tied for CC#6, his photo #23013. Our grade is net VG10+, very close to F12. This is one of only a very few of the variety seen with smooth surfaces. And it comes with an impressive provenance. (The slab is scuffed and scratched.) 1431.20/32206063 Ex Dr. William H.
