INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024

LOT 284 1797 S-142 R5+ G5. Several points sharper with patches of fine roughness, especially on the reverse. No notable contact marks but there is a bit of verdigris in a rough patch on the bust and more at UN. Partly glossy medium brown and chocolate with darker olive brown in protected areas. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse is very slightly misaligned to the bottom but the strike is more even that that on the preceding lot.

LOT 281 1797 S-136 R3 NGC graded VF20. Frosty chocolate brown and steel. The obverse is covered with extremely fine granularity and there is shallow crud in the protected areas on that side. A small nick under the Y and a minor rim nick left of the first S in STATES are the only notable marks. This cent has nice eye appeal for the grade in spite of the imperfect surfaces. LDS, Breen state V, with die cracks on the reverse and the usual blunted details on that side. Our grade is F15+. 4497122-001

LOT 282 1797 S-137 R2 PCGS graded VF35. Very attractive frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth with trivial marks including a spot of darker olive brown toning tucked under the nostril and a tick at the bottom of the front edge of the neck. EDS, Breen state I, without any bulges or die cracks. Small lumps from die rust show in the fields on the obverse (Breen incorrectly stated the rust came after the reverse die cracked). Our grade is VF25+. (The slab is badly cracked on the obverse and scratched on the reverse.) 1422.35/81624232

LOT 285 1797 S-143 R5 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded F15. An attractive cent but there are some contact marks on otherwise smooth surfaces. The notable marks are a planchet chip in the hair under the B, a couple nicks in the hair under the chip, and a light rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. EDS, Breen state I, with faint die clashmarks. Struck slightly off center to K-6 causing weakness at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse. Our grade is net VG8+, close to VG10. 1425.15/34198838

 OFF-CENTER S-137

LOT 286 1797 NC-2 R6 Fair-2. Sharper but moderately corroded on the obverse with heavier roughness on the reverse. No marks, just traces of verdigris visible under magnification. Slightly glossy dark olive and chocolate. Rare EDS without a rim cud at ST. An ugly example of a tough variety.

LOT 283 1797 S-137 R2 VG10. Sharpness VF20, perhaps a bit better in some areas, but covered with fine roughness. The notable marks are a thin scratch on the shoulder and a small patch of raised reddish corrosion at ON in ONE. Slightly glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. LDS, Breen state VII, with obvious swelling on the reverse. Struck slightly off center to K-7 leaving the bottom of the date tight to the edge of the planchet.
