EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 230 1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap VG10. Sharper but the surfaces are covered with microscopic roughness and there are contact marks on both sides. The notable marks are a rim bruise at BE in LIBERTY, a collection of ticks at the mouth, and a half dozen small but obvious digs on the reverse. Slightly glossy dark steel with lighter steel on the highpoints. The 196 are strong but the 6 is weak due to the later die state.

LOT 232 1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap G6. Several points sharper but covered with fine roughness mixed with areas of shallow reddish corrosion, particularly in front of the face. A tiny speck of greenish verdigris at the top of the wreath is a good identifying mark. EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are clear but ONE is gone and CENT is weak.

LOT 231 1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF30. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. Smooth with nice eye appeal. The notable marks are a tiny pit with verdigris in the field at the chin, another low on the neck, and a spot of shallow crud over the T in UNITED. None of these defects is distracting at all. LDS, Breen state II, with a clear die crack up the right side of the 7 into the shoulder. Graded VF20 net F12 and tied for CC#15 in the Noyes census, his photo #37257. Our grade is net F12+. 1401.30/24098686

LOT 233 1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap G6. A few points sharper but the surfaces are lightly corroded under a slightly glossy dark olive and steel patina. A few small spots of reddish brown verdigris can be found on both sides, mostly on the lower half of the reverse, but there are no significant contact marks. The date is complete and easily readable but not strong, and the legends are clear except for OF, which is faint.

LOT 234 1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap G5. Several points sharper but covered with very fine roughness and lightly burnished under slightly glossy reddish brown toning. The notable marks are a few smoothed rim nicks at the top of the obverse and several planchet chips at the U in UNITED (as struck). The date is strong and the legends are clear except for some weakness on STATES OF. Far from perfect but this variety usually comes in very low grade. Struck with the reverse nearly upset with a 160 degree CCW rotation from the normal head-to-foot orientation.
