2024 EAC Sale

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 223 1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap G5. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel with darker chocolate toning in the fields and protected areas. Smooth and attractive, just worn. The only marks are a pair of tiny rim nicks at TY in LIBERTY. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. EDS. Nice for the grade, and the obverse may be a point or two better.

LOT 222 1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap F12. Much sharper but covered with moderate roughness and greenish verdigris shows in protected areas, especially around the date. The only marks are two short, old scratches left of the lower curls. Looks like a cent that was rescued from soil.

 CLIPPED PLANCHET

LOT 224 1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap F12+. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth with very nice eye appeal. The only notable mark is a dull scratch in the hair from right of the bottom of the cap to between the tops of the 7 & 9. Otherwise this cent would rate a slightly higher grade. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack at ERTY. There is a curved planchet clip off the bust tip. Noyes graded VF20 net F12 and tied for CC#11, his photo #38910.

Ex 2002 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions, 4/20/2002:187-Daniel W. Trollan

LOT 225 1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap G4. Rather glossy brown and light chocolate. The obverse is sharper than the reverse, perhaps a 5+/3- split. The notable defect is an arc of dark toning mixed with verdigris on the right side of the wreath. The date is strong. EDS, Breen state I.

LOT 226 1796 S-84 R4 Liberty Cap VG7. Glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. Smooth with just a few minor marks. The notable ones are a few light rim bruises near the bust tip and a small planchet chip at the dentils over the F in OF. The date and legends are clear except for weakness at ED-ST due to swelling in that area.
